ARENBERG CAMPUS LIBRARY, KATHOLIEKE UNIVERSITEIT LEUVEN
Leuven, Belgium

1997-2002

  • In 1995, the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven awarded an honorary doctorate to architect Rafael Moneo, shortly afterwards appointing him to the task of designing a library. The Arenberg Library went up on the ruins of the Monastery of the Celestines, completing its cloister with a building that speaks the language of modern tradition and connects the different types of architecture found there. This building attracts attention and may even be regarded as the star of the show, but it does not contain the whole library: the library invades the rest of the buildings, transforming and absorbing them for the sake of the complex program. Examples of this are the longitudinal pavilion functioning as a reading room, or the conversion of the perimeter walls into the borders of the book room, with its surprising shape.
