ADDITION TO CRANBROOK ACADEMY OF ART AND ART MUSEUM.
IN COLLABORATION WITH MONEO-BROCK STUDIO

Michigan, USA

1991-2002

  • The sequence of concatenated buildings around Carl Milles’s fountain/square that Eliel Saarinen built in the course of his long life, but which was interrupted by the museum, was completed with this intervention, which decisively rejected the symmetry suggested by the fountain. Instead Moneo proposed a building with two accesses: one from the fountain/square, and the other from the courtyard freely formed behind the building. Nevertheless, the continuity of interior spaces eases passage from the museum to the new workshops.
