DIESTRE TRANSFORMER FACTORY
ZARAGOZA, SPAIN

1964-1967

  • Drawn up in Rome, this was Moneo’s first built project. Commissioned by Luis and José María Diestre, friends of Rafael Moneo Sr., this project allowed the architect to explore the extent to which he was capable of appropriating the principles that inspired the architects he admired. It was crucial, for example, for a building of this kind to have the form-structure coherence advocated by James Stirling. Allusions to nature, characteristic of Alvar Aalto’s works, can be seen in the building’s profile, suggesting the mountains that border the Ebro Valley.
