PILAR AND JOAN MIRÓ FOUNDATION
Palma de Mallorca, Spain

1987-1992

  • As director of the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation, Miguel Servera entrusted Rafael Moneo with a project that would complete the set of buildings erected on Joan Miró’s property in Son Abrines: an 18th-century mansion, the Miró family home designed by the architect Juncosa, and the studio designed by the architect Josep Lluís Sert. Moneo’s work confronts the dilapidated environment and tries to rescue the lost bay by carrying water to the roof of a concrete building consisting of a longitudinal element crowned by a star-shaped polygon reminiscent of a fortress’s bastion, a metaphor of the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró defending itself in a hostile setting. On another note, the uneven and broken condition of this architecture enables Miró’s oeuvre, with its moments of epiphany and discontinuity, to fit in here.
